The “Now It’s Experience Talking” event, hosted at Alliance Française by iconic Kenyan artists Muthoni Drummer Queen and Blinky Bill, was an unforgettable midweek segway. Despite being held on a Wednesday—smack in the middle of the week—the atmosphere, turnout, and energy were so electric you’d think it was a weekend party. The crowd was buzzing, and the vibes were just right.

The event was more than just a concert; it was a celebration of Kenyan culture and artistry. The crowd, a vibrant mix of Nairobi’s creative community, came together to celebrate the rich tapestry of local talent. It was clear that this gathering was about more than just music; it was about community, resilience, and the undeniable spirit of Nairobi. In a city that often feels fragmented by the pressures of daily life, events like this remind us of the power of art to unite and inspire.

The visualizers on display were mesmerizing, perfectly synchronized with the music, performances, and dynamic stage lighting. At one point, I had to stop dancing just to soak in the stunning art installations on screen that added a unique layer of artistry to the event. The visuals were not merely backdrops; they were integral to the experience, enhancing the emotional depth of the performances. Each image and light sequence told a story, pulling the audience deeper into the narrative being crafted on stage. It was a multisensory feast, a testament to the creativity and innovation of the artists involved.

Blinky’s latest Album – We Cut Keys 2 was a highlight of the playlist for sure

Then, there was the performance itself! Where do I even begin? The live band brought everything to life, with a riffing bassist, amazing drum set, harmonious horns, and sweet keys—every element was spot on. Muthoni Drummer Queen dominated the stage, her powerful voice matched only by her bold and elegant movements. Blinky Bill brought the perfect blend of laid-back and groovy vibes, and together, they were in perfect harmony. The chemistry between them was palpable, a reflection of years of collaboration and mutual respect. And let’s not forget the incredible Lisa Oduor! She was amazing in every way, from her unique vocals to the infectious energy she brought to the stage. Her presence added a fresh dynamic to the evening, making the performance even more memorable.

The setlist was a carefully curated journey through the duo’s musical evolution. And the music! Every track was a hit, from crowd favorites like “Mungu Halali,” “Suzie Noma,” “Feeling It,” “Pomoni,” “Raha,” “Attenshan,” to new, unreleased songs they’ve been working on since 2020, which they promised to release soon. These new tracks, while unfamiliar to the audience, were met with just as much enthusiasm as the classics, a testament to the trust and connection these artists have built with their fans. The audience was completely engaged, singing along and dancing as if they were part of the performance.
