iNTHEARTS
Histories at Noon | Goethe-Institut Auditorium | Thursday 22 May | 3 – 6pm
Joel Lukhovi is a visual artist working primarily with lens-based media. With photography, he continues to respond, visualize and interpret new ways of representing images by grappling with socio-political, cultural and intimate topics. Joel has shown his work in East Africa, Sweden, Germany, France and UK. His work has been published and collected widely. He is a global recipient of the prestigious Intercultural Encounters Award, by the government of Austria.
In the “Ties that Bind” exhibition, Joel reveals the family as a social construct using the camera as a mechanism by which to better understand their own familial histories and personal relationships. Indeed, the relationship between photography and the archive is symbiotic. Focusing on archival images as a subject, Joel looks at new ways of engaging with personal histories and ponder on the re-imagined archive despite constant threats of destruction, erasure and manipulation while ensuring preservation. Check out his work among others currently showing in our auditorium.
Phoney | The Creatives Garage (The Mall, Westlands) | Friday 23 – Sunday 25 May
PHONEY — a photographic excavation of the present day. This one’s for anyone who’s ever paused mid-scroll and wondered, wait… is any of this even real? Come see what happens when the pixels get personal.
We inhabit illusions while truth stands in plain sight, unacknowledged. Phoney is a photographic excavation of our digital performance, capturing the dissonance between curated personas and unfiltered truth. We live in portraits: carefully edited fragments until the frame becomes the reality. With nostalgic grain meeting contemporary pretence, each image poses a raw, unsettling question: When did our reflections start watching us back? And if we deleted ourselves tomorrow, would the pixels even notice? Limited tickets on Mookh.

This weekend, we will use Dr. Mary Njeri Kinyanjui’s Tea and Coffee documentary to spark discourse and agitation around a specific form of imperial/colonial economic exploitation that disproportionately impacts African women, particularly peasant women farmers. Join us as we listen to and engage with the women who labor in cash crop plantations, as well as explore humanizing strategies to resist the globalized economic exploitation of African women peasant farmers. ALL ARE WELCOME. Live streaming on calotropis radio.
