iNSTAGES

Picha | Kenya National Theatre | Saturday 5 April, 6pm | Sunday 6 April, 3pm

Picha follows the unravelling of secrets behind the seemingly perfect family portrait of Kanini’s family. Kanini is a middle aged mother and wife who, in her mind, having to create this image of a decent and respectable family has turned a blind eye to horrid experiences both in the past and the present. This image is shuttered when a photo with a deep secret is discovered. The conflict between the two images forces her to make an irreparable choice. Question is, is it too late or, does she even have the mental fortitude to make the ‘right’ choice?

PICHA is a deeply emotive family drama performed fully in swahili as written by Mohamed Komeja and directed by Martin Kigondu. The Prevail Presents production is produced by both Komeja and Kigondu and stars Lucy Wache, Suzanne Karani, Polyann Njeri, Fadhili Kerosi with Michael Ndunda as Mkwajumrefu and Suki Wanza as Mwanambali. This is PICHA’s 1st revival since 1985. The play is set in the late 90s

The play is performed in Swahili, making it accessible to a broad audience.

Collective Open Mic will spotlight resilience in its latest edition, featuring The Poetic Snob, the 63rd Grand Slam Champion on Thursday, April 3, at @barazamedialab from 5 PM to 7 PM . Her poetry explores womanhood, mental health, and the strength found in vulnerability.. Entry is free, and attendees can RSVP at linktr.ee/rafinki.

Book Club Meet Up | Provisions Kenya | Saturday 5 April | 10am – 12pm

Dance of the Jakaranda by Peter Kimani: 1963. Kenya is on the verge of independence from British colonial rule. In the Great Rift Valley, Kenyans of all backgrounds come together in the previously white-only establishment of the Jakaranda Hotel. The resident musician is Rajan Salim, who charms visitors with songs inspired by his grandfather’s noble stories of the railway construction that spawned the Kenya they now know.

One evening, Rajan is kissed by a mysterious woman in a shadowy corridor. Unable to forget the taste of her lavender-flavoured lips, Rajan sets out to find her. On his journey he stumbles upon the murky, shared history of three men – his grandfather, the owner of the Jakaranda and a British preacher – who were implicated in the controversial birth of a child. What Rajan unearths will open his eyes about the birth not just of a child, but of an entire nation.

The book is available for purchase at Provisions or online for delivery via Soma Nami Bookstore

She delves into the internal struggle between long- held beliefs and the shifting perspectives that emerge when we begin to question them. Maringa begins by bleaching paper, symbolizing the distortion of our true selves, a result of societal conditioning from birth. This bleached paper is then burned, representing the painful but necessary process of confronting and understanding our evolving perspectives. The remnants of the paper are adhered to colored paper, symbolizing the rebirth and renewal of self, as the act of choice introduces new ways of being and thinking.
