In partnership with Storymoja Africa, Start A Library Trust would love you to join in and support the 2026 National Read Aloud World Record Edition, to be held on Friday, 10th July 2026, in celebration of Kenya’s National Reading Day.
Start A Library aims to rally 1,000,000 learners from over 3,000 schools to read the same text, at the same time, across all 47 counties of Kenya!
Start A Library Trust are a locally led social impact organization championing foundational literacy and nurturing a strong reading culture among children in public primary schools, particularly in rural communities and urban slums. Through their work, they equip schools – yes, state schools – with libraries, and provide children with the skills, confidence, and opportunities they need to become curious learners and active contributors to society.

The National Read Aloud began in 2013, inspired by the saying, “If you want to hide something from an African, hide it in a book”. From the beginning, the goal has been to challenge this belief and make reading visible, joyful, and meaningful for children. Over the years, the initiative has grown into a flagship annual event and is now the largest coordinated read aloud gathering of children in Kenya and beyond. The National
Read Aloud has played an important role in strengthening reading culture by encouraging children to read for pleasure, sparking imagination and creativity, and helping learners see themselves as active participants in shaping their communities. The 2026 Read Aloud goes beyond a world record; it is a national declaration that children’s voices matter and that literacy is a powerful tool for change.
This year’s theme: Human–Wildlife Coexistence
This theme is a bold affirmation that wildlife is a source of Kenyan pride, despite some outside narratives, and an inheritance worth protecting. By participating, children step forward not only as readers but as custodians of a shared future.
Many Kenyan children experience conservation as something distant, fenced off in parks or seen only by tourists. Yet, 65% of Kenya’s wildlife lives outside protected areas, sharing land with the very farms, schools, and paths our children walk every day. In counties like Narok, Laikipia, Taita Taveta, and Meru, human–wildlife conflict is a lived reality. Many children in these communities see and experience the benefits of coexistence firsthand: schools and health centres built, scholarships awarded to themselves or siblings, and other community development initiatives supported through tourism. They understand the positive impact of wildlife on their lives and now want to raise their voices to ensure it is protected.

For this year’s National Read Aloud, learners will read an excerpt from The Boy and the Lion, a true story set in the Maasai Mara, published by Storymoja. As they follow a young boy’s encounter with a lioness at dusk, they will confront the real-world tension between fear and courage, survival and conservation. Through this story, children begin to see themselves as part of the solution, empowered, informed, and ready to advocate for the balance between humans and wildlife in their own communities.
Shared reading is a powerful experience that goes far beyond helping children learn how to read. As children listen, engage, and respond to stories, they build vocabulary, strengthen comprehension, and develop critical thinking skills. At the same time, the interaction creates a sense of emotional safety and connection, helping children feel seen, heard, and confident to express their ideas. Through stories, they explore new worlds, perspectives, and possibilities, nurturing empathy and imagination. In essence, shared reading not only builds literacy, it shapes confident, curious, and expressive learners. Together, with learners, educators, parents, government, partners, and communities, we have the opportunity to raise a generation that reads deeply, thinks boldly, and acts responsibly.

One million children. One shared story. One defining moment for Kenya, and for the future of how we live with the world around us.
