Nairobi, Kenya – October 2025:
Afrika House, in collaboration with 199xorg and The Station, is proud to present Jogoo Wa Shamba Wawika Mjini — a bold and thought-provoking photography exhibition currently showing at The Holmes à Court Gallery from October 4th to November 1st, 2025.

Translating to “A Village Rooster Crows in the City,” the exhibition explores themes of migration, memory, and identity through the contemporary African gaze. The works challenge perceptions of modern urban life, rural nostalgia, and the evolution of self within a rapidly changing social landscape.

This exhibition marks five years of 199xOrg, a creative collective and production company formed by four artists working across fashion, film, photography and cultural storytelling. Their practice is inspired by East African cultures yet extends outward, engaging with global contexts through a distinct visual perspective. Together, they create audiovisual projects and visual narratives that merge tradition with contemporary expression, positioning culture as both subject and foundation.

In ‘Jogoo Wa Shamba Wawika Mjini’ , the collective turns its lens inward to celebrate its journey and outward to interrogate the shifting identities of rural youth in urban spaces. The works explore resilience, adaptation and hybridity, how the values and textures of countryside living survive, shift and re-emerge in the chaos of the city.

As a collective, they draw from different disciplines but share a common purpose: reframing representation and expanding the possibilities of how African creativity is seen, remembered and archived. Their work moves between editorial bodies of work, conceptual fashion films and commercial productions, always with an emphasis on cultural depth and authenticity.

Curated by The Station, this exhibition reflects a new generation of African photographers interrogating space, belonging, and visual storytelling.

The Station reimagines the boundaries of engagement through
art and experiences. Our goal is to dismantle traditional barriers,
creating immersive and thought-provoking experiences that
extend far beyond the confines of conventional spaces. We
challenge the limits of what art can be, using innovative design to
engage audiences on deeper emotional, intellectual, and sensory
levels. Our vision is to transform spaces into experiential landscapes
where art, culture, and human connection come alive.
