Every October, the Kenyan capital pulses with a unique rhythm — the cadence of running shoes hitting asphalt, cheers echoing along city streets, and the hopeful determination in every runner’s eyes.
A Storied Past — From Humble Beginnings to Flagship Marathon
The Nairobi Marathon traces its roots to 2003, when Standard Chartered Bank launched the race partly in celebration of its 150th anniversary. Originally modest in scope, the event quickly captured imaginations, growing from a few thousand participants into one of Kenya’s biggest mass-participation sporting spectacles.
Over the years, the race earned recognition from global bodies like AIMS and World Athletics, cementing its status on the international racing calendar. Through more than twenty editions, the marathon has drawn hundreds of thousands of participants cumulatively. Its early course wound through Nairobi’s central business district, past landmarks such as Kenyatta Avenue, Moi Avenue, and the KICC. Evolving logistics, traffic considerations, and ambitions for scenic vistas later pushed parts of the route toward the Southern Bypass and areas adjacent to the Nairobi National Park.
The marathon also carries a social mission. Proceeds and visibility have been leveraged to support community initiatives — particularly through Standard Chartered’s “Futuremakers” platform — and to promote health, wellness, and inclusive sport in Kenya. While strides have been made toward inclusion (such as wheelchair categories), advocates still note the need for greater accessibility and support to level the playing field.

What to Expect in 2025
Date & Format
The 2025 edition will take place on Sunday, 26 October 2025. The race features multiple categories: full marathon (42.195 km), half marathon (21.097 km), 10 km, 5 km fun run, a wheelchair marathon, and corporate/CEO challenge divisions.
Route & Scenery
One of the standout features of SCNM2025 is its course alignment along the Southern Bypass, giving participants sweeping views of the Nairobi National Park — a rare urban-wildlife juxtaposition. The route also forges connections into the city, allowing runners to pass through swathes of Nairobi’s neighborhoods and main arteries. Organizers have committed to a scenic, spectator-friendly race, integrating both iconic and residential zones into the experience.
Competitive Stakes & Prize Money
The marathon will distribute prize money across all categories for both male and female divisions, including the wheelchair races and corporate challenges. The event fosters strong competition among Kenya’s elite runners while inviting international participants seeking a challenging yet rewarding course.
Registration & Logistics
Entry is open to all — amateur and elite — across distances from 5 km to the full marathon. Bib collection will take place in the days leading up to the event, and timing, hydration, medical, and security support will be provided along the route.
Nairobi City Marathon 2025 – A New Complement
While the Standard Chartered Marathon remains Nairobi’s flagship, 2025 also sees the Nairobi City Marathon gaining steam as a modern, urban alternative. Held on 6 July 2025, this was its fourth edition, featuring a full marathon, half marathon, 10 km express run, and a 4 km fun run.
The City Marathon drew over 15,000 participants, a record for the event. Champions Benson Murkomen (Men’s 42 km) and Emily Chepkemoi (Women’s 42 km) earned KSh 3.5 million each, with Murkomen’s 2:08:37 finish just shy of the course record. While newer than SCNM, the City Marathon is quickly carving a niche by offering flatter terrain, faster times, and a panoramic course along the Nairobi Expressway — a symbol of the city’s modern growth.
