Pungulu Party – March 1: Nairobi’s Most Joyful Family Festival Returns
Tickets available on Mookh
On Sunday, March 1, Nairobi’s family events calendar gets a cultural upgrade.
Pungulu Party – Forest Edition returns to the Parade Ring at Ngong Racecourse, transforming the space into a vibrant playground of music, storytelling, animation and nature-inspired creativity.
Created by Pungulu Pa Productions, the festival is an extension of the beloved animated series Uli & Tata’s African Nursery Rhymes. What began as a screen-based celebration of African songs and stories has grown into one of the most exciting family-friendly cultural experiences in Nairobi.
This is not just a kids’ event. It is a full power, super cool cultural moment.

What Is Pungulu Party?
Pungulu Party was born from a simple but powerful idea: if children can experience African culture through animation, why not bring that world into real life?
The result is a fully immersive festival where:
• Traditional rhythms meet live performance
• Storytelling happens under open skies
• Creative workshops spark imagination
• Play becomes a form of cultural learning
Expect interactive zones inspired by the animated universe, music sessions rooted in African soundscapes, storytelling circles, movement workshops and a curated marketplace spotlighting Kenyan brands.
The Forest Edition theme places special focus on ecology, trees, birds and the landscapes that inspire the Pungulu universe. It is playful, but intentional. Educational, but never heavy.
The Studio Behind It
At the heart of it all is Pungulu Pa Productions, the Nairobi-based animation studio co-founded by Chief Nyamweya and Sarah Mallia.
The studio was created to fill a gap in children’s media. For years, most kids in Kenya grew up consuming imported cartoons that rarely reflected their languages, landscapes or lived realities.
Pungulu Pa Productions set out to change that… Their flagship series, Uli & Tata’s African Nursery Rhymes, blends 2D animation with traditional songs, oral storytelling and ecological awareness. It is joyful, musical and deeply rooted in African heritage.
Pungulu Party is the real-world manifestation of that philosophy.
“When we released Uli & Tata, families kept asking how their children could experience it beyond the screen,” says Chief Nyamweya, Creative Director and Co-Founder. “Pungulu Party is our answer. It’s where animation meets live music, storytelling, and real community.”
He adds, “Culture is cumulative. Every generation adds to it. Through this event, we’re adding our layer, preserving songs that already exist and presenting them in ways today’s children can connect with.”
Why It Matters for Nairobi
Nairobi is known for nightlife, fashion and music innovation. But a new creative frontier is emerging: children’s intellectual property and family-centred cultural experiences.
Pungulu Party signals that the city is building worlds not just for adults, but for the next generation.
If you are searching for:
• Family events in Nairobi
• Kids festivals in Nairobi
• Creative outdoor experiences for children
• Culturally grounded activities
March 1 should be in your diary.
This is where animation meets identity.
Where play meets heritage.
Where Nairobi’s youngest citizens get a universe of their own.
From screen to shared space
Since launching in late 2024, Uli & Tata’s African Nursery Rhymes has reached millions of viewers through YouTube and Akili Kids TV. After a series of sold-out screenings and growing demand from parents for offline experiences, the team created Pungulu Party! as a way to bring the stories into real-world spaces.
The event reflects the studio’s broader mission: to create African children’s content and experiences that build cultural literacy, nurture environmental awareness, and support positive identity formation.
For Nairobi families looking for a meaningful weekend experience, Pungulu Party! offers a full day of culture, nature, and play, rooted in the songs of our land.
