A Junior Company Production by Dance Centre Kenya
Step into a world of rhythm, heritage, and youthful bravado this October as Dance Centre Kenya comes together with Shujaa Stories to present Tales of Mashujaa, a celebration of Kenyan legends brought to life through dance, narration, and boundless imagination. Designed especially for children and families, this is a journey through time, identity, and heroism, set to inspire young hearts.
Dance Centre Kenya, led by Cooper Rust, has built a strong reputation for combining excellent dance training with meaningful content. Past productions such as Shujaa Stories have demonstrated their ability to turn Kenyan history and heritage into moving performances that resonate with diverse audiences. Tales of Mashujaa continues in that tradition—but scales it for younger performers and for audiences seeking joy, identity, and inspiration.
Young dancers from the DCK Junior Company take centre stage to perform original choreography, fusing movement and storytelling that reflects the lives and legacies of Kenya’s “Mashujaa” — its heroes.
Shujaa Stories is a Kenyan initiative that highlights folk and cultural heroes (“Shujaas”), male and female, from across the wide and diverse range of Kenyan communities — people whose stories are often not widely known, and are not always included in mainstream curricula. Conceived in 2017 by Masidza Galavu and Jeff Muchina, the project uses a range of creative media to bring the Shujaas’ stories to life.

More than a dance show
Blending dance, live narration, and original music, Tales of Mashujaa celebrates Kenya’s heritage through the stories of national heroes and heroines. Directed by Watiri Nduba and Joy Gitonga, with an original score by Andrew Tumbo, the production brings to life inspiring tales that will spark curiosity and pride in young audiences.
The stories behind the heroes are woven into the performance, giving voice and context to each movement and gesture. The narration connects the audience, especially children, to the characters being depicted.
Tales of Mashujaa brings to life the stories of Kenya’s unsung heroes and heroines from across the country. Taking audiences on a journey through legends of prophets, warriors, mystics, leaders, and resistance fighters—figures like Mepoho the Giriama seer, Mukite the Bukusu warrior, Moraa wa Ngi’iti of Kisii, and Syotune wa Kathuke of Ukambani. With twelve brand-new Shujaas featured this year, the production blends history, culture, and artistry into a moving celebration of Kenyan heritage, honoring the resilience and courage of those who shaped our nation.
Illustrious narrators weaving tales
This year’s production features an outstanding lineup of guest narrators, including: John Sibi-Okumu, Apondi Nyang’aya, Kitt Kiarie, Njoki Karu and Eli Mwenda – with a unique narrator for each performance.
This show is not just dance—it’s storytelling, artistry, history, and live performance all combined. This creative fusion helps make the stories more vivid and memorable. This production is perfectly suited for audiences of all ages – a chance for families to come together around Kenya’s history and culture.
At a time when it’s important to remember who we are and where we come from, Tales of Mashujaa honors those whose courage and vision shaped Kenya’s story. Celebrate our heroes white experiencing the joy of theatre – let Tales of Mashujaa stir your pride, inspire your children, and remind us all that the heroes of our past are alive in our hearts and in the stories we tell.
